Last Saturday Garnock travelled to Kirkcaldy for a National League Cup 2nd Round fixture. This was the second time in three season the sides had been drawn against each other at this stage of the competition
The game marked Stuart Wilson’s 300th appearance for the Garnock 1st XV. This is a remarkable achievement and is testament to Stuart’s commitment to the club. With both the club captain and vice-captain unavailable through injury Stuart also took on the role of captain.
The game kicked off in bright but chilly conditions. The first 20 minutes were relatively even with both sides attacking when possible. Garnock backs looked dangerous and Kirkcaldy’s strong running second row and No8 catching the eye.
With 30 minutes gone Kirkcaldy had opened up a 12 point lead but the visitors continued to attack when possible. On one such foray Garnock worked their way upfield before a neat backs move released full-back Cian Smith to score out wide taking the score to 12-5.
The final 10 minutes of the half were spent almost entirely in the visitors half with Kirkcaldy adding two further converted tries taking the score at the break t0 26-5. If Garnock were get back into the game they would need to significantly improve during the second period
While the visitors performance was better in the second half moments of individual error or loss of concentration allowed Kirkcaldy to add three further tries to a single Garnock reply through Matt Shiells which was converted. Final score 47-12
This week Garnock return to league action travelling to face league leaders Preston Lodge with a 2pm kick off.
